What does Microsoft and Nintendo’s collaboration mean for Sony?
We all know by now that Microsoft and Nintendo have teamed up to promote cross – play, which has had mixed reviews from YOU. Before we discuss what you guys have been saying about this mind-blowing move from Nintendo and Microsoft; we thought we should add some context…
So why have they teamed up?
Sony is doing EXTREMELY well on sales and consistently continues to do so. They blow Microsoft and Nintendo out of the water, to be honest. At the start of the year alone; PS4’s passed the 75 Million mark of consoles sold! Pretty impressive right?
Unfortunately, Microsoft only sold 36 million (which is 1.5% short of being halfway) according to vgchartz.com. Even though there clearly is a BIG difference in sales – we can’t dispute that 36 million is still remarkable.
However, last in the league is our beloved Nintendo Switch – that by all accounts had a fantastic year; which resulted in them closing the market on Xbox. Altogether they sold 14.46 million units, this left them with an 11% on the market share.
A HUGE well done to all!
What teaming up means for PlayStation?
Will PlayStation suffer? This is the question that everyone is asking and the answer is not so much, no.
However, the new Minecraft Cross-Play campaign made by both platforms has made a lot of you guys question whether or not it’s a swipe at Sony. A majority of gamers; saw the promotion for what it is… a promotion. However, there were some comments made that makes people believe that their marketing tool of; ‘Survive Together’ highlights the ongoing battle between Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo and the financial struggles that the two are facing in comparison to Sony. Of course, this is completely opinion based.
One thing that is clear from the cross-play announcement is that a LOT of you guys don’t feel heard and would like to see Sony join in. However, the truth is that is probably not going to happen any time soon. Nor do they need it too – while it is exciting and different what Nintendo and Microsoft are doing together; it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will change PlayStations stance on the subject.
What is PlayStation’s Stance?
Even though we can’t possibly see Sony initiating cross-play fully, it doesn’t mean they aren’t listening to the players. An official statement was made by; Shawn Layden during Gamelab conference in Spain today. The President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios said;
“We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
This has been the first official comment from Sony – following the Fortnite issue where PlayStation users found out that they couldn’t use their accounts on Nintendo Switch.
We know you – fellow gamers want more answers from Sony but unfortunately, we all have to sit tight. We will keep you updated with more news soon. But for now; you can either survive together…
…or survive alone with PlayStation.
