The Ultimate Retro Games in History to Play

As we move into 4K, new consoles and superior graphics in Gaming – it is easy to forget those games that made us all fall in love with gaming in the first place! Our mission is to remind you of those Ultimate Retro Games that once upon a time, put a smile on your face;

Pac Man, 1980

Inspired by a pizza with a missing slice, Pac Man is a hungry entity that needs to eat without being caught by the Ghosts, using power-ups you are able to eat the Ghosts themselves! The best part of this game is that it is so highly addictive; you invest in breaking that high score that you have just achieved. Its hands down, one of our favourite games ever!

Donkey Kong, 1981

An arcade game that has clearly taken some inspiration from the general concept of Snake and Ladders was a huge success in the 80s and for good reason too! As a colourful arcade game, you are introduced to a character with a lot of personality and a new way to communicate without the use of words. But that’s not the only reason it was highly addictive as an arcade game; the multi-stage design was a big element as to how and why the game was as successful as it was, with players desire to see the next level adding to motivation to put more money into the game. However, we don’t think that Miyamoto himself could foresee how successful his creation would be.

Tetris, 1984

You can’t talk about retro games and not mention Tetris; this vibrant arcade game had us all hooked for hours on end. It was hard to believe that you were even thinking about strategy whilst playing the game – but you were! We still smile as we play on Tetris today, moving the shapes so that they fit nicely together and you get that full line so it disappears. Ultimately, being one of the most satisfying feelings ever! If you are looking for a feel-good game that will bring you excitement, then this is the game for you!

Metal Gear Solid, 1987

SNAKE, SNAKE; Where are you SNAKE? If you haven’t heard this sentence before with the terrifying screeching sound effects then you need to find a way to play this game! Stealth being the objective as you (special ops Soldier Solid Snake) infiltrate Outer Heaven on the trail of missing agent Gray Fox whilst being directed by his BIG boss – you will not be stuck for action and adventure with this fantastic game!

Super Mario Bros 3, 1988

Do you remember the good ole NES Days? Well, we do and one of our all-time favourites is; Super Mario Bros 3. Okay, it doesn’t look as clean compared to the modern releases, however, it is a timeless classic. We fell in love with the story that we have all come to know – with Mario and his brother Luigi, embarking on a mission to save Princess Toadstool from the antagonistic Bowser. This game is guaranteed to keep you hooked for hours on end and it was no surprise that the game was an instant success and has continued to be.

Final Fantasy VI, 1994

With a mission to bring peace by stopping the Empire, after the Emperor’s top general; Kefka – betrays him and takes power. You will never be bored with this plot and these characters that invite us into a world of magic, action and intense drama, this is definitely a must play, which will also make you appreciate the modern Final Fantasies’.

Grand Theft Auto. 1997

If there is a game that encourages violence and theft then this it. Of course, there is more to the game itself than stealing cars and hurting other ‘people’ in the game, for example; you do have missions to complete but only if you want too. The fact that it was quite a new concept where you can drive with the top down and roam the city, which is one of the biggest reasons why it is and was such a success in the first place. Simple, but yet fun.

Tenchu Stealth Assassins, 1998

Think back to a time before Assassins Creed blew up and honed your Ninja skills. The only game to play was Technu as you climb up and across buildings. The reason why we still love to play this title today is due to the mystical weapons and being able to master dozens of Ninja Skills. In addition, throwing stars felt pretty cool. So make sure you pick up this game; stalk the towns, temples, forest, caves, and dungeons of 16th Century Japan in 10 deadly missions.

So out of the list above which retro game do you think you will be picking up to play and why? Let us know on our social channels below…
