As June brings Pride Month festivities and the anticipation of International Pride Day on June 28, we highlight some standout games that embrace LGBTQ+ themes and characters. These titles entertain and provide meaningful reflections of diverse identities, fostering a more inclusive gaming community.

The Last of Us

Ellie stands out in “The Last of Us,” a critically acclaimed shooter hailed as one of the greatest games ever. This teenage protagonist fights to survive in a post-apocalyptic world and battles for the freedom to love. Check out our full review of the game!


In “The Last of Us: The Left Behind,” an additional chapter to the original game, Ellie embarks on a romantic adventure with her friend Riley. “The Last of Us II” further explores her love with Dina. The first game also features Bill and Frank, one of the earliest openly gay couples in video games, who find love and share their lives amidst the chaos.


Celeste

Overwatch

Overwatch, a popular cross-platform FPS, includes Tracer, a lesbian character who has become an LGBTQ+ icon and a beloved figure in the series. Another character, Jack Morrison, also known as Soldier 76, left his boyfriend behind to fight for peace on Earth.


Life is Strange

The Life is Strange franchise prominently features LGBTQ+ representation, emphasising diversity and inclusion. Characters like Max, Chloe, and Rachel demonstrate the myriad forms love can take. Players decide the romantic paths of the protagonists without restrictions. This theme continues with Sean in “Life is Strange 2” and Steph and Alex Chen in “Life is Strange: True Colours.”


Mass Effect/Dragon Age

BioWare, a prominent game company, champions LGBTQ+ characters in many titles. In “Mass Effect,” characters like Asari scientist Liara T’Soni, Kaiden Alenko, Jack, Kelly Chambers, Samara, Morinth, Steve Cortez, and Samantha Traynor embody this movement.


In another successful series, “Dragon Age,” players can choose romances regardless of gender or condition. “Dragon Age: Inquisition” features Dorian Pavus, the saga’s first openly gay character.


Tell Me Why

Dear Althea

The game also emphasises consent in all aspects of relationships.

Available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC, “Haven” follows lovers Yu and Kay as they escape to an uninhabited planet called Source. Originally featuring a heterosexual relationship, a free update in March 2022 added same-sex couple options for Yu and Kay, enhancing its inclusive narrative. You can even play “Haven” in co-op mode with someone special.


Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, “Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey” introduced significant same-sex romance options in the franchise, fitting its choice-based narrative and ancient Greek setting. While these relationships don’t alter the story’s outcome, they add depth to Kassandra or Alexios’s epic Spartan adventures.


Stardew Valley

Available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, Android, and iOS, “Stardew Valley” offers players the chance to live a simple, rural life while allowing same-sex relationships and marriages. This critically acclaimed indie game lets players pursue love with characters of any gender and even get divorced, providing a realistic and inclusive view of relationships.
